I am the author and illustrator of the book McMurphy’s Law. This story developed from my interest in animals and my love for illustration work. I’m always a big advocate for adopting animals instead of purchasing them from breeders because there are already so many animals that are already here that want and deserve homes.
The story is based on a real cat from the Humane Society of Portage County named McMurphy. Who arrived at the HSPC very late in his life (he was approximately 20 human years old) with the concern he had various illnesses, that he seemed to overcome with his wise eyes, so we thought “hey, he’s probably been through a lot, I wonder what those things were?” We worked together to figure out points that had to be true, like him being a farm cat, and that he loves dogs more than he likes cats.
The title McMurphy’s Law is a play on Murphy’s law which is an epigram that is typically stated as “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” I chose this mostly because of his name, and how it just looked like he had been through a lot when I met him. We could say that McMurphy’s Law is an epigram that we could state as “anything that may go wrong will go wrong, but you can overcome it.”
