Neenah Local Heroes

Shop Local would like you to join us as we salute our local heroes. We take this time to honor the Neenah Police Department & K-9 unit, Neenah Firefighters, and Honor Flight. These local heroes are dedicated to their community and its welfare. Below are just a few details about the valuable departments within our community, and the services they provide.

Please come out and join us during Shop Local Week to support our local heroes and thank them for their service. Donation cards will be available at all participating Shop Local businesses.

In 2012, Neenah Police employees partnered with the community and rose over $90,000 to create their first K-9 program. Officer Chris Gorden was selected to be the handler, and Neenah PD’s first K9, Cedric, was introduced to the community. Police K9 teams provide unique and valuable services to communities. Their duties include drug detection, tracking, area searches, and officer protection and support. K9 teams have also proven to be great community educators, and they are frequently called upon to make presentations for schools, service clubs, and private industry.

Police K9s typically have a working life of about 6 years. That means they’re already about halfway through Cedric’s expected professional career. While they hope he can serve even longer, there has to be a plan for the next chapter of the Neenah Police K9 program. That means acquiring a new dog, identifying a new handler, and providing new training and equipment. And of course, that all takes money.

The Neenah Police Department is asking for the community to please consider becoming a member of the local K-9 Unit support team.  This will not be possible or successful without private funding from local citizens and business leaders. We always accept tax-deductible donations to our police K-9 trust fund.

Neenah – Menasha Fire Rescue was created on January 1, 2003. They have 68 career employees who are committed to preserving the lives and property within the cities of Neenah and Menasha. The communities are served from four fire stations located in strategic areas to provide for efficient response to virtually any type of emergency situation, including fire suppression, auto extrication and ice/water rescue. The Department carries out this commitment through award-winning fire prevention education programming, supported by rapid, efficient response for fire, EMS and rescue emergencies.

Local members are also proud to volunteer their time and money to various charities in the Cities of Neenah and Menasha. Their 4th annual Backdraft Bike Tour will be held on Sunday June 7th, 2015. Proceeds from this tour will go to Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin Burn Summer Camp. Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin Burn Summer Camp is an organization whose mission is to “promote, encourage and foster fire safety, burn prevention and public fire safety education”.  They support burn survivors of all ages in addition to sponsorship of the Summer Camp for Burn Injured Youth

Old Glory Honor Flight

http://www.oldgloryhonorflight.org/

Our mission is to offer our local World War II and Korean War veterans a memorable, safe and rewarding tour of honor to our nation’s capital. It’s a whirlwind tour. This trip happens all in one day and is completely free of charge to the vet! It’s our small way to say ‘thank you’ for their service and sacrifices to this great country. We are also dedicated to making this trip as safe as possible. Trained volunteer ‘guardians’ are assigned to accompany every veteran. For added safety, we travel with volunteer medical professionals.

Following the lead of groups from LaCrosse and Milwaukee, the idea of forming an Honor Flight hub was introduced to Northeast Wisconsin in mid-2009. Several individuals pursuing the goal on parallel paths joined forces and the organization began to take shape. Through the hard work from the Board and other volunteers Mission I was completed on October 27, 2009, and all 95 WWII Veterans had a safe and extremely enjoyable trip.

We plan to continue this program until EVERY WWII VETERAN gets the opportunity to visit their memorial, and will proceed to offer honor flights to veterans of other armed conflicts in the future.
